What an amazing Word! There is such freedom in the Truth of God.
So…I have a confession. I don’t have good eating habits. It is a continuous struggle for me to eat appropriate portions, and to not eat late at night. I struggle with the sin of gluttony. I get frustrated by that. I’m sure you have your own personal battles. You may wonder why you keep going back to a certain behavior or why you can’t stop a certain thing. Well, this sermon is all good news!
You see, the power of victory over sin is already inside the believer! In Genesis 4 is the story of Cain and Abel. In verses 3-7 it tells that both Cain and Abel brought offerings to the Lord. God was pleased with Abel’s but was not with Cain’s (the reason for this is another story…). When Cain heard this he was mad. The Lord asked him why he was mad and then God says (in v.7) that if Cain doesn’t do well then sin is crouching at his door and sin’s desire is for Cain. Then God says, “but you must rule over it (sin)”. Wow! That means Cain (and, therefore, us) already has the ability to actually rule over sin.
Believe this…you are not a victim of yourself, you are not unable, you are not weak. Hallelujah! So, sin is not the problem, rebellion is! There is actually a process of rebellion Pastor James talks about:
Rebellion> Independence> Hurt> Fear> Anger> Hate> Pain> Rebellion
The cycle of rebellion continues. This is why Jesus said, “You must be born again”. Born again, not from your sin, but into your true identity! Whoa!! So don’t make light of your sin. Rule over it!
